It is time for a little background on why I created Bingeing Watches. Born in the 70s and growing up in the 80s, it was a time where we looked to the future with excitement and high expectations. Technology was being developed at a fast pace, and you could tell the pace was increasing. Older people still had wind up watches and even a pocket watch wasn't unusual. My dad had a wind up silver sunburst dial watch with raised markers, a date window, a smooth sweeping seconds hand that had multiple ticks per second. I remember holding it up to my ear and listening to the sound of it operating and listening to the sound of it being wound up. I remember get my own watches and they were quartz and had a different and more pronounced style of ticking. I also remember getting a quartz digital watch and it was silent and I was in awe of all the features it had. I spent hours admiring and mentally studying those watches. I also always like to see the watches other people chose and hear why they got them. They always seemed to have an interesting story behind the purchase or gift.
I came up with a tagline that I think captures the essence of why I created Bingeing Watches. The tagline is "Time Well Spent" and it was chosen because of my focus on affordable, quality, time pieces. When considering purchasing a watch, it is important to do some research and that research takes time. As you shop you will learn what you like and what you don't. You will find what captures your heart and imagination. The more research you do, the easier it is to choose well. You will find that watches range in price from less than twenty dollars to well over a million dollars. You will learn that you don't have to spend a lot of money to to get a nice watch. There are diminishing returns as you go up in price. A twenty dollar watch tells the time as good as and sometimes better than a million dollar watch. So my goal is to help you find the best watch available for the cost, so you don't have any regrets after the money is spent. "Time Well Spent"
I grew up in the 80s and for me, the quartz crisis was more of a quartz revolution. Back then, an accurate time piece was a critical piece of life and even young kids had a simple quartz watch. I went through a lot of watches. Around the year 2000, I started using a phone to tell the time instead of a watch because it was accurate and I always had it with me. Smart phones furthered the trend of going watch free until it became unusual to see watches. Around 2012, a new word was coined for when you snub someone you are with by checking your phone, it was called "phubbing" and it showed up in a lot of news reports after that. People would get called out for phubbing and people started talking a lot about cell phone etiquette. This was a good thing because back then people used to wander around with cell phones on speaker phones yelling a conversation for the whole world to hear. In 2019, I switched jobs to an office where business clothes were required. I was very conscious of the fact that I did not want to be that guy with the phone, but I also knew I needed to be aware of the time. So I started to shop for a watch. I spent some time and learned about watches. I decided I needed a grown up watch and in my mind that meant automatic mechanical and it should be a dress watch to go with my business dress wardrobe. After searching high and low, I settled on one that had caught my eye. It was a Seiko Presage Cocktail Time Blue Moon SRPB41J1. I ordered it online from Macy's for $324 on sale from $450 and got a great watch. I loved it for years. I soon wanted variety and continued to learn about watches. I purchased other watches and as I did, I realized I preferred quartz watches and a variety of watches instead a single expensive watch. I found that a $30 Casio Royale brought me as much joy as my $324 Seiko.
Since the joy for me wasn't tied to price, I began to look at what meant the most to me when it came to watches. For me, it is like 80% looks. A watch is a piece of jewelry that is functional. So I want a watch that calls to me. It catches my eye. It makes me think about it. Then it is about 15% function. I don't need most of the feature. I have a smartphone for that. I just need it to tell time fairly accurately. Quartz excels at this task. The final 5% comes down to price because while I could stretch my budget and buy a luxury watch, I am not going to, because there are better ways to spend that same money. Ways that are more in line with what is important to me in a watch. So my purpose is to help you find what is important to you so your money and time is well spent. Bingeing Watches exists to help people find quality time pieces at affordable prices. We educate consumers on what makes a watch worth the money you spend on it.
Bingeing Watches approach is a little different. Bingeing Watches starts with the premise that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a good watch. Unlike most watch reviewers, we embrace the quartz revolution. By having no inventory and instead just serving as a trusted reviewer, we can focus on value tier watches and in the future we can rely on affiliate marketing to create passive income to fund the website. I don't need to push the most expensive watches just to clear my inventory, instead I can be honest in what I think really matters. Bingeing Watches values integrity, independence, quality and affordability. We won’t recommend something we wouldn't buy ourselves. Bingeing Watches customers are people who want a watch, but don’t want to spend a lot of money. They want to find a watch that meets their needs without breaking the bank. They understand that finding a a trusted resource and researching before making a purchase is Time Well Spent.
Our aim is to provide quality content in an easily understood format. Pictures are worth a thousand words as they say, so we will focus on improving our photography and content to provide you the most value. We wanted a clean website, without a lot of distraction, so we went with a simple black and white theme with small pops of accent color. We wanted the watches to be the star of the show. Simple logo and tagline, so you know that we are all about making sure it is Time Well Spent. We will have some exciting news in the future and will continue to review watches, straps, bracelets, tools, storage and anything else related to watches.
So tell your friends about the site and check back often for the latest information. It will be Time Well Spent!
