AI creates watch art

With all the excitement about AI these days, I decided to give it a shot and had the OpenAI.com DALL·E 2 create some watch related art. It was a fun experience that opened my mind to the possibilities AI presents. I found that the more realistic images I chose, the worse it did. However when I asked for abstract painting style art it gave me some fun virtual impasto and impressionistic art that I kind of like.

Unfortunately, thick impasto painting which I love, does not translate well to digital. It ends up looking interesting but not anywhere near as good as a real painting.

As much as I wanted it to be great, it only seemed to be kind of good. A real artist has a knack for things the AI just doesn't seem to grasp yet. Part of what makes it interesting to me, is the fact that AI doesn't quite get it, and ends up doing weird and unusual things.

I did love the fact that when AI thinks of digital watches, it thinks of Casio design cues. This one looked like several Casio models and yet not one specific model. So much so that I asked it to make Casio watches and had a similar experience.

AI isn't there yet in my opinion, but it is getting better everyday. I can see it being used for watch design and redesign. Uploading pictures and creating examples of what can be done. However, I believe there will always be a place for real art and artists. Watch enthusiasts appreciate the fine details. So like any tool, AI has a place but what matters is knowing how to use it, and clearly I am not there yet.
